To consider what it means to be ‘rich towards God’ from spiritual and material points of view.

You will need...

A Bible, you may find pen & paper helpful.

Starter

Money is a very practical subject for a Bible study, so it is possible that you may find the way you

think, and what you do changing as a result of what you discover.

Prayer

O God our Father, help us to think and pray in our getting and spending.

Bring your order to our owning, guide our giving and help us to be thankful for all we have. Amen.

Read Luke 12:13-21

• Comparing what you have written in the barns with what you have just read from the Bible, what

strikes you from the text?

•Think about ways in which you can identify with the man in the parable, the man who is asking

about the inheritance, or the character of Jesus that this passage reveals.

• What do you think the man in the parable would have said to his soul if he knew he was going to

die?

Text Box: What would Jesus say?
Look back at the barns you have filled.
• Identify, by ticking or circling, the areas in the barns where most of your money goes.
• Identify the areas you spend least on
• How does your use of money express your deepest values?

Imagine yourself now, in front of Jesus. What might Jesus be saying to you?

What does it mean to be ‘rich towards God?

Text Box: In the third barn show some of the things that make you rich towards God. You might use some of the items you have already put in the first or second barns, or add new ones – either solid possessions or things that money cannot buy.

During the week

Identify one of the items you have put in the third barn. As this study is about ‘getting’, think of one

thing you might do to ‘get’ something that makes you rich towards God.

This kind of wealth may have to do with silent reflective insights into your faith, or to active

development of love and service to others. Remember, we can serve God by serving others.
