For a quick study, follow the items with headings in bold type
Aim
To acknowledge that money affects all of us and to consider how money, or the lack of it, affects
us as a community.
You will need...
A Bible, paper & pen, your wallet or purse.
Starter: Answer four questions about the contents of your wallet or purse:
1. What do the contents show about something you enjoy doing?
2. What do the contents tell about relationships that are important to you?
3. Do the contents affirm something you value deeply?
4. Do the contents sit easily or uneasily with your faith?
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, we invite you to nourish and challenge our faith, so that we may follow your will
in our getting, spending and owning.
Pause for thought
Consider how you stand financially in relation to a wider community.
In 2008 in the UK, The top 10% of earners received more than £946 per week, while the bottom
10% earned less than £262. (UK Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings.) This places the bottom
10% in the UK in the top 0.001% in the world. (http://www.globalrichlist.com/index.php)
• How do you know how rich or poor you are? With whom do you compare yourself?
Make a note of the reasons James gives to suggest that discrimination is a matter of faith.
During the week
On a credit card-sized piece of card, below the heading Challenge on one side and Good News on
the other, write words or brief phrases to help you reflect on insights from this study.
Keep the card in your wallet or purse and use these insights to help your prayers at least once this
week.
